Cable protection for electrical engineering & electronics

Cable Protection for Electrical Engineering and Electronics: Bundling and Insulating Cables

In control cabinets, motors and electronic systems, cables perform a wide range of functions. Accordingly, the requirements for their protection also vary: some cables need to be neatly bundled and protected against abrasion. In other areas, heat-resistant materials or electrical insulation with verified dielectric strength are required.

Techflex offers braided sleeving and insulating sleeves for these different applications. Selection depends on the installation location, temperature, mechanical stress and electrical requirements. A sleeve intended for cable bundling does not replace electrical insulation specifically designed for that purpose.

What Types of Stress Occur in Electrical Systems?

During installation or operation, cables can rub against edges and adjacent components. Vibration and repeated movement increase this stress. Motors and transformers can also involve elevated temperatures, while control cabinets often require orderly cable routing and good accessibility for modifications.

For applications involving high electrical voltages, the insulating sleeve must be selected to suit the requirements of the system. Dielectric strength specifications apply to the respective product and its tested configuration. Requirements relating to fire behaviour should also be assessed using the relevant product documentation.

Bundling Cables and Protecting Them Against Abrasion

Flexo® PET is a flexible braided sleeve for bundling and covering cables. It is suitable for applications where cables need to be routed in an organised manner and protected against mechanical abrasion. The available colours can help identify cable bundles or adapt the cable routing to the system.

According to the product description, Flexo® PET is designed for temperatures from −70 °C to 125 °C. For applications requiring a defined dielectric strength, however, a suitable insulating sleeve should be selected.

Heat-Resistant Insulating Sleeves for Motors and Transformers

Flame Retardant Silicone Flex Glass® – Grade C is a flame-resistant, silicone-coated fiberglass sleeve. The product page specifies a dielectric strength of 2,500 V and a continuous operating temperature of up to 220 °C. It is suitable for applications where electrical insulation, temperature resistance and fire behaviour all need to be taken into account.

Heavy Wall Silicone Flex Glass® features a thicker silicone coating. According to the product description, its dielectric strength is 15,000 V, and the specified continuous operating temperature is up to 200 °C. Whether the sleeve is suitable for a high-voltage application must be assessed on the basis of the electrical design and installation conditions.

Selecting Insulation to Match the Application

Flame Retardant Silicone Flex Glass® – Grade A is another flame-resistant version with a silicone coating. A dielectric strength of 7,000 V is specified for this product. It may, for example, be considered for cables in motors or transformers if its technical characteristics meet the project requirements.

Acrylic Flex Glass® – Grade A, by contrast, uses an acrylic coating. The product page also specifies a dielectric strength of 7,000 V and continuous operation at temperatures up to 155 °C. This provides another insulation solution for applications with different temperature and material requirements.
