Cable Protection for Mechanical Engineering: Targeted Protection for Cables and Hoses

In machines and industrial systems, cables and hoses are often exposed to movement, vibration, abrasion or high temperatures. In other installation areas, oil, chemicals, sparks or hot components may also be present. When selecting cable protection, the actual stresses and the routing of the cables therefore need to be taken into account.

Techflex offers braided and woven sleeving for a wide range of mechanical engineering applications: from mechanical abrasion protection and retrofitted bundling to protection against radiant heat. Many versions can be installed around cables that are already in place. This can simplify both installation and subsequent maintenance.

Abrasion Protection for Moving Cables and Wiring

Where cables rub against machine components, a durable protective covering helps reduce wear. Flexo F6® Heavy Duty is a side-entry protective sleeve with high cut and abrasion resistance. It can be retrofitted around cables without disconnecting existing connectors. This makes it suitable, among other applications, for cable routing in production systems and around hydraulic equipment.

Dura Wrap provides a robust woven covering with a hook-and-loop fastener. It can be opened, installed and accessed again when modifications to the cable bundle are required. This type of installation can be particularly useful on machines where wiring is regularly adapted.

VersaWraptor® also uses a hook-and-loop closure. The woven sleeve is suitable for cables and hoses that need protection against abrasion while remaining accessible for maintenance. If the material comes into contact with oil or other operating fluids, the resistance specifications of the respective product should be checked.

Burst Protection for Hydraulic Hoses

Hydraulic lines have different requirements from electrical cables. In addition to abrasion and movement, the possibility of hose failure may also be relevant when selecting the protective covering.

Gator Wrap® is an abrasion-resistant burst-protection sleeve with a high-performance hook-and-loop fastener. It can be retrofitted around hoses and is intended for applications involving high mechanical loads. Suitability for a specific hydraulic system should be assessed on the basis of pressure, hose routing and the technical product documentation.

Protection Against Radiant Heat, Sparks and Swarf

Near hot engines or machine components, radiant heat can place stress on wiring. T6 ThermaShield® features a reflective aluminium coating and is designed to protect against this type of heat exposure. Its side opening allows it to be installed around cables that have already been routed.

Welding and metalworking involve different types of stress. Turtle Wrap is a neoprene-coated protective sleeve with a hook-and-loop fastener. According to the product description, it resists swarf and sparks and provides abrasion protection. Suitability for a particular workplace depends on temperature, spark exposure and the installation situation.

Self-Closing Sleeves for Retrofitting

Where cables are added or cable bundles are changed frequently, a side-access protective sleeve makes the work easier. F6® Woven Wrap is a self-closing woven sleeve that can be wrapped around existing cable bundles. It combines organised cable routing with mechanical protection while allowing later access to the wiring.

F6 X combines a self-closing design with Nomex® braided material. This version is suitable for applications where, in addition to easy installation, the temperature and fire behaviour of the material are important. The specific requirements should be compared with the technical data for the product.
