Cable Protection for Rail Transport: Protecting Wiring in Trains and Railway Technology

Control cables, power cables and data lines must operate reliably over the long term in rail transport. Inside vehicles, they are exposed to vibration, abrasion and temperature fluctuations. At the same time, fire protection requirements place high demands on the materials used.

What Requirements Apply to Cable Protection in Rail Transport?

In trains, cables often run through confined spaces: behind panels, in technical areas or close to moving components. Repeated vibration and contact with adjacent surfaces can put stress on the cables. Suitable protective sleeving reduces abrasion and keeps cable bundles organised.

Fire behaviour is another important consideration. DIN EN 45545-2 defines requirements for materials and components used in rail vehicles. When selecting a product, the relevant documentation for the specific application should therefore always be checked. A general reference to the standard does not replace this assessment.

Flame-Retardant Braided Sleeving for Rail Vehicles

Flexo® Flame Retardant is a flame-retardant PET braided sleeve. It bundles cables and protects them against abrasion. Thanks to its expandability, it can be adapted to different cable bundle sizes and is suitable for wiring applications where both mechanical protection and the fire behaviour of the material are important.

Clean Cut® Flame Retardant combines flame-retardant properties with easy processing. The braided sleeve can be cut without excessive fraying. This makes it easier to achieve clean ends and simplifies installation, for example on branched cable harnesses or when working with control and data cables.

Both products should be compared with the requirements of the intended installation location using their respective technical documentation.

Self-Closing Cable Protection for Installation and Maintenance

Not every cable installation is protected during initial assembly. During maintenance, repair or retrofitting, it may be necessary to fit a protective sleeve around cables that have already been installed.

Flexo F6® Flame Retardant features a side opening and closes around the cable bundle. This allows cables to be bundled without having to remove them completely. This version is particularly useful where cables need to remain accessible for future work.

F6® Woven Wrap Flame Retardant is also designed for retrofitting around existing cable bundles. Its dense woven structure provides mechanical protection, while the self-closing design makes access easier when modifications to the wiring are required.
