Cable protection for renewable energies
Cable Protection for Renewable Energy: Protecting Cables in Wind, Solar and Hydropower Systems
In renewable energy systems, cables and hoses often run outdoors or through technically demanding areas. Depending on the installation location, they may be exposed to UV radiation, moisture, vibration and mechanical abrasion. Wind turbines also involve moving cable routes and hydraulic hoses, while cables in solar parks are often exposed to weather conditions over long distances.
Techflex offers braided, woven and insulating sleeving for different protection requirements. Selection depends on the actual load: a product designed for high abrasion protection does not automatically meet requirements for electrical insulation or water sealing.
Mechanical Cable Protection in Wind Turbines
In wind turbines, cables and hoses can be stressed by vibration, movement or contact with adjacent components. Flexo® Stainless Steel is a dense braid made from 304 stainless steel. It surrounds cables and hoses and provides robust protection against mechanical wear.
Flexo® Stainless Steel XC is another stainless-steel version for applications with high mechanical demands. For offshore projects, the specific environmental conditions must also be considered: material, salt exposure, installation location and required corrosion resistance are decisive factors when selecting a product.
An open metal braid is not a substitute for waterproof cable protection. Whether a product is suitable for a specific application should be checked using its technical documentation.
Abrasion Protection for Solar and Wind Power Systems
Cables in solar parks and wind turbines can rub against structures or be exposed to mechanical stress during installation and maintenance. Dura Wrap is a robust woven sleeve with a hook-and-loop fastener. It can be wrapped around cables that have already been installed, making it suitable for retrofitted cable protection or applications where the sleeve needs to be reopened for maintenance.
Turtle Wrap combines woven fabric with a neoprene coating. It may be suitable for cables that are exposed not only to abrasion but also to moisture or sparks. Actual suitability depends on the installation location and the stresses that occur there.
Protection for Hydraulic Hoses
Hydraulic hoses in wind turbines require protection that matches pressure, movement and mechanical stress. Gator Wrap® is a durable woven sleeve with a hook-and-loop fastener for heavily stressed hoses. Its burst-protection function may be relevant when selecting protection for hydraulic applications.
For long-term abrasion protection outdoors, Dura Flex® offers a densely woven nylon design. According to the product description, the material is resistant to factors including UV radiation and salt. Dura Flex® Pro is intended for applications with particularly high mechanical loads and burst-protection requirements. The two products should be selected according to their specific task.
Electrical Insulation for Generators and Transformers
Generators and transformers may require electrical insulation in addition to mechanical protection. Heavy Wall Silicone Flex Glass® is a silicone-coated fiberglass sleeve whose product description specifies dielectric strength of up to 15,000 volts.
Whether it is suitable for a particular application depends on the required electrical characteristics, temperature and installation conditions. The design of electrical systems must take these requirements into account separately.
