Cable Protection for the Automotive Industry: Protecting Cables and Wiring in Vehicles

Electrical and electronic systems are taking on an increasing number of functions in modern vehicles. To ensure that power supply, sensors and control systems operate reliably, cables and wiring must be protected over the long term. Depending on where they are installed, they may be exposed to movement, vibration, abrasion, chemicals or high temperatures. Flexible Cable Protection for Moving Vehicle Components

In doors and other moving components, cables are bent and moved every time they are used. The cable protection must follow these movements without unnecessarily restricting the cables. Expandable braided sleeving bundles cables while also protecting them from friction and mechanical stress.

Similar requirements apply to cables for sensors and control units. These may run through areas where vibration, impact and elevated temperatures occur simultaneously. Protection that is matched to the specific installation location helps prevent cable damage and the resulting malfunctions.

Abrasion Protection for Vibration and Mechanical Stress

Inside a vehicle, cables may rub against adjacent components or be subjected to continuous vibration. For these applications, Nylon® Monofilament offers an expandable, robust braided sleeve with high abrasion resistance and temperature stability.

Where chemical resistance is also required, Flexo® PPS is a suitable option. This lightweight braided sleeve combines mechanical protection with resistance to high temperatures and chemical influences. The most suitable material depends on the temperature, contact with substances and mechanical stress at the respective installation location.

Heat Protection for the Engine Compartment and Exhaust System

Near engines and exhaust systems, abrasion protection alone is often not sufficient. In these areas, cables and wiring require protection against continuously high temperatures or radiant heat.

Insultherm® is a thick-walled fiberglass woven sleeve designed for applications involving high thermal stress. T6 Thermashield®, by contrast, uses a reflective aluminium coating to protect cables from radiant heat. Thanks to its side opening, the sleeve can also be installed around cables that have already been routed.
