Cable protection for the steel industry

Cable protection for the steel industry: robustness under extreme conditions

Extreme conditions prevail in the steel industry: High temperatures, flying sparks and mechanical loads put cables and wires to the test. Reliable cable protection ensures that electrical systems function safely and trouble-free. Techflex offers specialized solutions for the unique challenges of steel production.

The right heat protection differs depending on the application. There are two main strategies: heat reflection and thermal insulation. While reflective materials repel radiant heat, insulating materials prevent heat from penetrating the cables.

Reflective protection against radiant heat

The T6 ThermaShield®, for example, is made of fiberglass laminated with aluminium and reliably protects cables from radiant heat. The reflective surface makes this heat protection conduit ideal for cables in the vicinity of blast furnaces, smelting plants or hot machine components. The side opening and the high-temperature-resistant adhesive strip enable quick retrofitting without dismantling the cables.

Thermal insulation for extreme temperatures

In high-temperature areas such as melting furnaces or rolling mills, cables must be protected from extreme heat. Highly insulating materials are used here.

The Insultherm® FI fire protection conduit combines a heat-resistant fiberglass braid with a heavy silicone coating. It permanently protects cables from temperatures of up to 1,120°C and can even withstand welding spatter and hot slag. It offers reliable protection against constant heat and mechanical abrasion, particularly in welding robots or foundry systems, but also in the context of aircraft engines. It is also resistant to chemicals.

The Flexo® Silica Sleeve consists of densely woven silicon fibers and offers exceptional insulation at temperatures of up to 982°C. With a wall thickness of 1.5 mm, it protects sensitive cables and components from extreme heat. Ideal for applications in close proximity to hot metal parts or exhaust systems. The high flexibility enables easy installation over existing cables.

The Insultherm® Header Wrap SI is a silica wrap tape that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,093°C. It is made from amorphous silica filament yarns and is perfect for insulating hot pipes. This tape effectively prevents heat transfer to adjacent components and ensures maximum safety in extreme environments, such as near blast furnaces.

Welding protection for cables in harsh environments

In steelworks and metalworking companies, cables are regularly exposed to welding spatter, sparks and hot slag. Special welding protection prevents damage and extends the service life of cables. In addition to the effects of heat, cables in steelworks also have to withstand mechanical stresses such as vibrations, impacts and abrasion.

Weld Wrap® Heavy is woven from silicon dioxide yarns and therefore has a highly heat-resistant coating. The hook and loop fastener guarantees a tight fit and can be easily attached to fully assembled systems. The Weld Wrap® Heavy offers high abrasion and fire protection.
