Which cable protection sleeve is the right one for my project?
This depends on the requirements of your application:
Standard bundling for indoor use: Braided sleeves such as Flexo PET offer a flexible and clean solution.
Retrofitting: Self-closing sleeves such as Flexo F6 can be installed without having to disconnect cables that have already been installed.
High loads & abrasion: Flexo Heavy Wall and Dura Wrap provide extra protection. Products such as Flexo Clean Cut Heavy can be cut with scissors without fraying.
Extreme temperatures: Special heat protection sleeves (e.g. for automotive, industrial or HVAC applications) protect against radiant heat and chemical influences.
What is the difference between braided sleeves and self-closing sleeves?
Conventional braided sleeves must be pulled over the cable before cable installation and provide fully enclosed protection. Self-closing sleeves (such as the F6 series)
have a longitudinal slit with an overlap: They can be wrapped around existing cable harnesses at any time and make it easier to branch off individual cables.
How do I cut a braided sleeve without the ends fraying?
We recommend using a hot cutting tool. The heat directly fuses the plastic fibres together during cutting, preventing fraying.
Alternatively, for variants such as Flexo Clean Cut, you can also use sharp scissors, as these are specially treated to prevent fraying.
How do I choose the right diameter?
Braided sleeves are stretchable and cover a variable diameter range (e.g. when compressed, they can expand to one and a half times their nominal diameter).
Measure the total diameter of your cable bundle at its widest point (including connectors) and choose a size where this value falls within the specified expansion range.
In the overview tables, the Dmin and Dmax are specified alongside the nominal diameter.
Are Techflex cable protection sleeves UV- and weather-resistant?
Yes, most of our materials made from PET, PA (polyamide) or special fibres are UV-resistant and rot-proof. This makes them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, as well as demanding industrial and automotive environments.
Do the sleeves provide protection against high temperatures?
Yes, Techflex offers products for different temperature ranges – from standard PET (up to approx. 125 °C) to high-temperature-resistant special sleeves (e.g. basalt, fibreglass or silicone) that can withstand temperatures of several hundred degrees. The exact temperature ratings can be found on the respective product detail pages.
Which cable protection sleeves are suitable for harsh industrial environments?
For mechanical and plant engineering, sleeves with high abrasion resistance, chemical and oil resistance, as well as flame retardancy, are primarily used.
Mechanical protection & abrasion protection: Sleeves made from strong polyamide (PA) or heavy-duty PET provide protection during continuous movement and abrasion.
Chemical resistance: For areas where contact with lubricants, acids or solvents occurs, specialised fibre structures provide long-lasting protection.
Are there flame-retardant or standards-certified sleeves?
Yes, many of our industrial products meet strict fire protection classifications (such as UL94 V-0) and are self-extinguishing as well as halogen-free. These certifications are particularly important for control cabinets, rail vehicles and building technology. REACH and RoHS documents are available upon request.
Which sleeves are suitable for the engine compartment and exhaust area?
High radiant heat, vibrations and fluids such as oil, petrol and coolant are present in the engine compartment.
Heat protection near the exhaust or manifold: Silicone-fibreglass sleeves or aluminium-coated fibreglass sleeves are used here, which can withstand temperatures from 500 °C to over 1,000 °C.
Abrasion protection for cable harnesses: Self-closing sleeves (such as Flexo F6) protect cable harnesses from vibrations and abrasion against body components.
Are Techflex products resistant to fuels and oils?
Yes, the materials used (e.g. PET, PA, basalt) are resistant to common automotive fluids such as engine oil, diesel, petrol, brake fluid and road salt and do not swell.
Which insulation and protection sleeves are used in HVAC and building technology?
In the HVAC industry, thermal insulation, condensation prevention and weather resistance are the main priorities:
Dura HVAC Wrap & insulation sleeves: These protect refrigerant lines and insulation foams from UV radiation, birds and mechanical damage outdoors.
Insulation & protection: Special covers prevent condensation from forming on refrigerant lines and protect outdoor pipes of heat pumps or air-conditioning systems.
Are the HVAC protective covers suitable for permanent outdoor use?
Yes, the HVAC product line is specifically designed for high UV exposure, extreme fluctuations in weather conditions and moisture, preventing the underlying insulation from becoming brittle or damaged.
Can I also order braided sleeves by the metre or in cut lengths?
Yes, we offer many of our cable protection sleeves both by the metre for smaller projects and prototypes as well as on large reels for industrial series production requirements.
In addition, we can provide custom lengths and customer-specific assemblies for prototypes, small batches and series production.
Do Techflex products meet standards such as REACH or RoHS?
All Techflex products naturally comply with the current REACH and RoHS directives. Numerous protection sleeves also have UL approvals as well as other industry-specific certifications. Thanks to our stockholding in Germany, many standard products can be delivered at short notice. In addition, we can provide custom lengths and customer-specific assemblies for prototypes, small batches and series production.
What accessories do I need for a clean and secure finish at the ends of the sleeves?
For a professional and durable finish at the sleeve ends, we recommend heat-shrink tubing (optionally with internal adhesive for waterproofing) or special cable ties and end caps. This prevents the sleeve from slipping and provides a clean appearance at the transition to the connector or housing.
